XR-based Mental Health
Training for Lay
Healthcare Workers

RESEARCH QUESTION:
How can XR MH training be designed in a way to help
overcome challenges in training lay healthcare workers
to screen community members?

Summary

Have you ever considered practicing what you would say or do in an intervention before you even began interacting with a community of people? Perhaps you wanted to see how a program worked before delivering it? Well, researchers at Neurohue are working to create a simulated training for community health workers working on mental health interventions in their communities. The simulated training, also called XR “extended reality,”, will have components of NYC Health’s recommendations, including relaxation & meditation, mental health first aid, and problem-solving therapy. Extended reality has the potential to be a powerful educational tool for mental health and could provide users with soft skill-building experiences through role-playing. The study is expected to run from June 2022 through September 2022.

How does Neurohue plan to use the data from this research?

Following the project and published findings, Neurohue will use the information collected as supporting evidence on how extended reality can be used for daily mental health interventions, such as in mental health and social risk screenings and assessments.

Data from this research will be used to evaluate the following:

The ultimate goal of this research will see whether or not extended reality can effectively train users in identifying, understanding, and resolving mental health issues and needs. For this project, the users include the community health workers and their members. This project will also evaluate how cost-effective an extended reality intervention would be if introduced, in comparison to other types of interventions. The study is successful when key outcomes set by the research team in partnership with the community, are achieved.
